Beautiful and low-key Sunday in Victoria!

Sunday – from SUNNY Victoria!  (Quelle surprise!)

Hello!

I am writing from a warm (relatively) and dry Victoria, enjoying the blue sky and sunshine that we haven’t seen on an all-day basis since we got here!  We woke up around 6, and it was really lovely!  When R and I went for our walk, we were both even wearing shorts, and while I wore my sweater, Robert went with just his t-shirt!  What fun!  Back to the flat for showers and breakfast, and finally back out into the sunshine around 10 a.m.

We headed toward the Empress Hotel, as we wanted to take the little harbor ferry service boats for a ride. Decided to take their harbor tour – about an hour, and one was just leaving.  Absolutely wonderful ride!  The harbor was fairly smooth, but there was some fog coming in from the strait.  As we chugged by, the Coho ferry (Black Ball line), which is how we got here, was leaving the pier – and she rode right into the fog and was gone!  We went all the way across the harbor, and learned about all the clean-up that has been done in the past 30 years.  At one point, most of the land just outside the inner harbor was industrial – everything from a lumber mill to huge oil storage tanks.  Now, almost all of the heavy industry has been relocated, and hotels and condominiums have taken their place.  I know it increases the population, but most of the condos are definitely an improvement.  They have also put walking/jogging trails along both sides of the harbor (like part of one which we are walking each morning).  There is still a small commercial fishing presence, but it actually blends into the background fairly well.  There are also two areas of houseboats – one part of “Fisherman’s Wharf” (where we’re catching the whale watching boat tomorrow) and the other rather ritzy, like a floating gated community with lovely three story houses!

The harbor tour finished and brought us back to the wharf in front of the Empress, where we disembarked.

As it was lunch time by now, we decided to see what Sam’s Deli had to offer; we ate there on Friday, and very much enjoyed their food.  This time, R and I ordered half-spinach salads with cups of their clam chowder.  Mom ordered a cup of chowder with half of a tuna salad sandwich.  Excellent, albeit unusual, chowder – not nearly so white as New England chowder usually is, and with many more pieces of carrot and potato; great!  Mom also had a double chocolate flourless tart, which she said was wonderful!  Robert had actually spotted a cupcake emporium that I had previously overlooked – HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE??   So we headed there now, to make up for days lost…really a cute shop, and as I couldn’t make up my mind, I got three cupcakes to go…chocolate/chocolate, red velvert, and chocolate/mint (green frosting!).  They’re rather small cupcakes (unlike my all-time favorite, Crumbs…) and so far, the red velvet was good but not memorable.

Then we headed back to the flat for a fairly easy afternoon.  We’ve seen just about everything that we had on our list, and done everything we’d wanted to do, with the exception of whale watching , which we’ll do tomorrow.  So, feel that a little recovery time is called for!  It’s 4 p.m. and we’re watching football, and none of us feels hungry at all…which is surprising, as we didn’t have that large a lunch, unless we’re still stuffed from last night, which is definitely possible!

Mom saying that she may stay in this evening, R wondering if we should order pizza.  I’d prefer a salad, but we’ll just have to see…maybe back to Sam’s for a sandwich?!  Yum!!
That’s about it for now!  More later!

PS – Not much more info!  R and I decided to head back to Sam’s deli for supper.   I had what Mom had for lunch – half tuna salad sandwich and another bowl of their wonderful chowder!  R had more  chowder too (it’s really good!) and their house salad.  To be honest, we had changed into jeans to go out, and as we were walking, we realized that the FOG was just rolling in, making things windy and damp!  Back to the flat as the fog followed us home, and is enveloping the adjacent buildings!  What does this mean for tomorrow??
