Tuesday – Victoria to SeaTac Airport
Hello!
Today is a fairly short blog, as it was a major travel day
for us. I wanted to be out of the flat
by 8 a.m. so that we could get down to the Black Ball ferry to Port Angeles in
good time – for the 10:30 a.m. boat.
(For the record, we had to be in line and ticketed BEFORE 9 a.m. in
order to clear U.S. customs before boarding the ship!) I do like being among (if not the) first in
circumstances…just ask anybody who has ever flown with us!!
At any rate, up about 6 and then the process of getting
everything assembled and out the door. We
took the sheets off the beds and put them into the washing machine. Also started the dishwasher one last
time. We had taken most of the heavy
luggage downstairs last thing last night, so that this morning there wasn’t too
much to take down. However, breakfast
first!
Out about 6:30 a.m. to Cora’s, a breakfast/lunch restaurant
just down the street. Very interesting
place; a franchise operation based in Canada.
They specialize in very “hearty” and fruit filed breakfasts – doing fun
things with melon and apples and kiwi.
We actually were fairly boring – R and I had side orders of ham and
breakfast potatoes – not much scope for fun there! Mom had a bagel and cream cheese with a
lovely sliced apple and kiwi – really cute!
Then, back to the flat…this time, sheets into the dryer, and
towels into the washer; dishwasher just finishing up. Finally, assembled everything that was left
over, and we were able to make it in one trip, which is surprising!! Robert did a brilliant job with storing
things in the car – and unbelievably, everything actually fit!! Way to go, Robert!!
Down to get in line for the Black Ball just a minute or two
after 8 a.m. – and actually, we were NOT the first in line! There was a veritable convoy of Airstream
trailers (apparently the Airstreamers were having a meeting of sorts here in
Victoria!) as well as some huge semi trucks!
At 9 a.m. American Customs and Border Patrol agents came through; had to
take the passports to be scanned, but that was about it. R very pleased that he didn’t have to take
any clothes off at all! Very easy; why
couldn’t this happen in airports, he wonders?! Finally, about 10:15 a.m. we were loaded
on. The cars and trucks were SOOOO close
together this trip; much less room than on the way over; wonder why?!
Got up to the passenger lounge to some comfortable
seating. The boat started moving very
quickly, and we were away and out of Victoria Inner Harbor! One last look at the Empress Hotel – just a
lovely place! It took a little over an
hour and a half to get to Port Angeles, and we were among the first cars off –
yea!! We had thought about having lunch
in Port Angeles, as it was already after 12 noon, but nothing caught our
attention, so we pointed the car to Sequim, where we had stayed on our way up.
Robert looked at TripAdvisor, who recommended the Oak Table
restaurant, so we headed there. It was a
truly lovely place! Family owned and
operated, with an emphasis on family dining and comfort and service. Lovely rooms (it could have been a house at
one time) and an excellent menu! Mom had
their beef and barley soup with bread and butter. Robert and I had their shrimp salads – and they
were really yummy!
Back on the road, and according to Maggie, my iPad, we were
not going to make the 3 p.m. ferry from Bainbridge Island to Seattle…so,
decided instead to drive around and through Tacoma. Made very good time – even though we did stop
at a local Target … Folks, the new
Star Trek Into Darkness DVD was released today – and it is one movie that I
just HAVE to have…so now we do!! Headed over the Tacoma Narrows bridge – a bit
scary, really, as I can’t help but see that video of the old bridge as it
buckled in the wind and finally collapsed…whew!
Made it over, and into the outskirts of Seattle to the hotel.
We’re at the Best
Western Executel, just a few minutes from the airport. As Mom’s plane leaves tomorrow morning at
7:15 a.m., we figured we should be as close as possible. Our plan is to get Mom to the airport,
checked in and into the security line.
Then, we’ll head back to the hotel, pack up everything (no easy feat!)
and begin our journey south, towards Oregon.
So…more later, once we’re back on the road!
Lots of love,
m
